Introducing the Twin Cities

• Twin Cities Metro Area Population: 3.69 million (2021)

• Twin Cities Population Rank: 16th in the nation ↗, immediately behind Seattle and immediately ahead of Tampa. It's the 15th largest media market in the country.

• Geographic Location: The Twin Cities are located in southeast Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River. The source of the Mississippi River is Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota.  The western end of Lake Superior is 160 miles to the north.

• Arts Scene: The Twin Cities have more theater seats per capita than any other American city except New York.  There are ~100 theater groups and 30 performance venues  ↗ in Minneapolis alone. There are 55 museums in the Twin Cities 

↗ and history sites all over the state. 

• History: For Native Americans ↗. Minnesota is centered within Dakota creation stories and is an important place in traditional Ojibwe history. Minnesota became a state in 1858. During the CIvil War, Minnesota furnished ↗ 11 infantry regiments, two companies of sharpshooters, several units of artillery and cavalry, and several dozen sailors.

• Mill City Roots ↗: Pillsbury and General Mills began in downtown Minneapolis in the late 1800s as competing flour milling companies on opposite banks of the Mississippi River.

• Outdoors in Minnesota: There are than 11,000 lakes ↗ in Minnesota with a total of 90,000 miles of shoreline. Minnesota has 75 state parks and recreation areas ↗.
